Career Information
Born on December 30, 1990, Joe Root comes from a cricketing lineage, with his grandfather leading Rotherham CC in the Yorkshire League for multiple seasons, and his younger brother, Billy, being a regular with Glamorgan. Root, a recipient of a Daily Telegraph scholarship at the 2005 Bunbury festival, earned cricket scholarships at Workshop College and the Yorkshire Cricket Academy. Making his Yorkshire second Team debut in July 2007, Root marked the occasion with a half-century.
His meteoric rise continued with a stellar performance for England Under-19 against Bangladesh Under-19 in 2010, securing a three-year professional contract with Yorkshire. Root’s County Championship debut in 2011 marked the beginning of his reputation as a reliable batsman. The breakthrough came in the following season with an undefeated 222 against Hampshire, setting the stage for a remarkable career.
In 2012, Root debuted for England during their historic Indian tour, displaying composure with a debut innings of 73 in Nagpur. Despite England winning the series, Root’s debut stood out. His ODI series contributions and a significant partnership with Jonny Bairstow against New Zealand added to his early successes.
Facing a stern challenge in the 2013 Ashes as an opener, Root responded with a monumental 180 at Lord’s. His hunger for runs continued, earning a central contract after England’s series win against Australia. In 2014, Root’s form soared, highlighted by an unbeaten 200 against Sri Lanka at Lord’s.
