Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell expressed his surprise at achieving a record-breaking 40-ball century during the World Cup clash against Netherlands on Wednesday (Oct 25).

In an interview with host broadcasters Star Sports, a visibly exhausted Maxwell expressed his surprise at his performance on the Arun Jaitley Stadium pitch, known for its conducive conditions for effective stroke-making. He shared, “I felt quite drained when I walked in to bat. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much due to my fatigue. But oddly enough, it seemed to clear my head a little, allowing me to go out there and play freely.” Known as “The Big Show,” Maxwell showcased his flamboyance, smashing nine boundaries and eight sixes on his way to the historic milestone. Ultimately, he concluded his innings with Maxwell remarkable 106 runs off just 44 balls, leading Australia to an impressive total of 400 runs.

When asked about his strategy against the Dutch bowlers, Maxwell explained, “I was focusing on understanding the bowlers because I believed I had ample time to adjust and adapt. He praised the Netherlands’ performance, acknowledging their exceptional fielding efforts that prevented certain boundaries in the initial 25-30 overs. Maxwell entered the game in the 40th over and immediately launched into an aggressive onslaught. The Dutch bowlers found no solution to his powerful batting display, as he achieved the fourth fastest century in all ODIs.
