A Rising Star Earns His Place in England’s World Cup Squad

England has finalized its 15-member squad for the upcoming 2023 Cricket World Cup, set to commence next month, with one noteworthy alteration from the provisional roster announced last month.

In the preliminary squad unveiled last month, England made some bold choices, welcoming back all-rounder Ben Stokes while omitting the young batting sensation Harry Brook and star speedster Jofra Archer. Nonetheless, an unexpected episode of back spasms that led to Jason Roy’s absence during the four-match series against New Zealand served as the catalyst for Brook’s reinstatement into the ODI squad. Despite a series against New Zealand that can be described as moderately successful at best, with scores of 25, 2, and 10, the 24-year-old’s remarkable ascent in the realm of international cricket undeniably justifies his inclusion in the squad.

Roy, who boasts two centuries from six ODIs in 2023, remains a potential addition to the squad that will face Ireland later this week. The final date for any World Cup squad adjustments is September 28.

Stokes, on the other hand, solidified his standing with an awe-inspiring performance after coming out of his ODI retirement, notching an impressive 182 runs off 124 balls against New Zealand. This extraordinary feat marked the highest score ever achieved by an England men’s player in ODIs.

Moreover, Dawid Malan cemented his position in the playing eleven during the New Zealand series by emerging as the top run-scorer, achieving his fifth ODI century along the way.

Adil Rashid, who participated in only a solitary match in the New Zealand series due to cramps, has received the green light to join the squad. Unfortunately, seamer Mark Wood is still on the path to recovery from a sore heel injury he sustained at the conclusion of the Ashes, and he has not been involved in any competitive cricket since the final Ashes Test.

Luke Wright, England Men’s National Selector, expressed confidence in the selected squad’s capabilities, stating, “We have selected a squad we are confident can go to India and win the World Cup. We are blessed with an incredibly strong group of white-ball players which was underlined by the performances in the series win against a very good New Zealand team. The strength of the group has meant that we have had to make some tough decisions on world-class players with Jason Roy missing out and Harry Brook coming into the squad.”
