The IPL Auction of 2024 presented a comprehensive inventory detailing the fate of 72 cricketers, indicating both successful acquisitions and players who remained unsold, culminating in an astonishing expenditure of ₹230.45 crore. In the IPL 2024 Auction Sold and Unsold Players highlighted Starc and Cummins as the most expensive purchases, with uncapped Indian players Rizvi and Kushagra achieving millionaire status.
In the IPL 2024 Auction, a total of 72 players were awarded IPL contracts on Tuesday, as 10 teams collectively expended a substantial sum of INR 230.45 crore. The trajectories of uncapped Indian cricketers Shubham Dubey and Sameer Rizvi witnessed a dramatic change overnight, as RR and CSK secured them for ₹5.8 crore and ₹8.4 crore, respectively. Following Mitchell Starc’s record-breaking acquisition, M Shahrukh Khan and Kumar Kushagra also experienced significant windfalls. KKR made a monumental investment of ₹24.75 crore to secure Starc, while Cummins found a spot with SRH for ₹20.5 crore. Indian pacers Umesh Yadav and Shivam Mavi secured contracts worth ₹5.8 crore and ₹6.4 crore, respectively, with GT and LSG. New Zealand all-rounder Daryl Mitchell came close to the ₹14 crore mark as he joined CSK. PBKS made headlines with a substantial ₹11.75 crore acquisition of Harshal Patel. CSK delved into the all-rounder category, securing Shardul Thakur (₹4 crore) and Rachin Ravindra (₹1.8 crore) in the second set.
The IPL auction witnessed a heated battle for West Indies T20 captain Rovman Powell, ultimately being sold for a remarkable ₹7.40 crore to RR after a fierce bidding war between Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders. Powell, with a base price of ₹1 crore, claimed the distinction of being the first player to be sold in the IPL 2024 auction. Rilee Rossouw failed to attract any bids, while DC secured Harry Brook for ₹4 crore. Another intense bidding war unfolded for Australia’s Travis Head between Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad, with the World Cup final hero eventually being sold to SRH for Rs. 6.8 crore, surpassing his base price of ₹2 crore. Notably, Steve Smith, Karun Nair, and Manish Pandey did not find any takers.
As anticipated, overseas keepers and spinners saw limited interest, with players like Josh Inglis, Kusal Mendis, Adil Rashid, and Mujeeb Ur Rahman remaining unsold. In the accelerated auction, the spotlight fell on uncapped Australian left-arm pacer Spencer Johnson, who secured a notable ₹10 crore deal with Gujarat Titans, while international cricketers Rassie van der Dussen, Jimmy Neesham, Michael Bracewell, Matt Henry, and Kyle Jamieson all failed to attract bids. GT also made a significant move by acquiring uncapped wicketkeeper Robin Minz for INR 3.6 crore.
